Jez.... this has a Jessica Lynch type feel good movie of the week written all over it, there's no way it's not going to be on Oprah now, absolutely none... the little players that could, sniff.
One of the things I learned on those constrasting teams , it had SFA to do with "teamwork" or "hard work paying off" or effort or dedication or the like. What it had to do with was the guy in charge of the league, our coach, also did all the sign ups and the hand picking of players. Our team was stacked from the get go, the others got the trash, only reason I was there was because my mom knew his wife.. and he had to afford one or two of those...regulars.
I later got placed on the losing team for a season or two because it pissed him off when surrounded by their players, I was the only one on defence, got the ball from them but was sure to lose it, so I did the only thing I could and passed it to my goalie behind me.... who let it go right passed him into the net, and even though it was after the whistle the ref counted it as a goal. Rather than blame the goalie who was sleeping I got full credit, so what the hell you know, I revelled in the congratulations from the other team, it's not as though we were about to lose or anything.
So I earned my punishment on the worst team, 30% girls, 70% all short, some overweight, 99% non athletic.... someone's hockey mom for a coach. We went to every single game knowing in advance we were in for another humiliating thrashing defeat.
Somehow I wound up on the good team again eventually.. thanks mom, and didn't give a damn anymore, seeing how hollow the victories were. I also got quite sick that year, mono, took me out for months. Then some other things happened and long story short, somewhere there's a team picture, yep, "bulldogs", holding up their gold medals, with me in the middle looking a little sickly, smile from ear to ear, middle finger fully extended...never to play again.
So, this guy was proud enough of such a glorious victory that he had to brag to the press about it, a certain south park related theme song comes to mind. Frankly I'd rather see him interviewed, he deserves the press after all.
