I know better than that, but I feel I should put a warning for the less cautious.

I have received a fake eBay e-mail with the following text (I removed the web link):

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
eBay Security

Dear eBay User ,
During our regular update and verification of the accounts, we couldn't verify your current information. Either your information has changed or it is incomplete. If the account information is not updated to correct information within 5 days then, your access to bid or buy on eBay will be restricted. Please update your information by completing the form from the forwarded link :

<LINK>

And login to eBay in order to update your informations. As outlined in our User Agreement, eBay will periodically send you information about site changes and enhancements.
Visit our Privacy Policy and User Agreement if you have any questions. Regards,Safeharbor Department
eBay, Inc.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have received this e-mail on an account I don't use anymore (although I still have it configured because sometimes I still receive messages there), and specially important, it's not the e-mail account I use on eBay :!:

eBay could never send you a message like this, to update your data.
Also, there's always your user name on the messages from eBay - not the case here.
Can you imagine what can happen if you follow the directions and put your data on a fake web site, and worse of all, your paypal user and password, or even more, your Visa card number :?: :!: :!:

I have reported this to eBay, with all the data they ask, like the e-mail header. They will track it down.
This is not only SPAM, this is a criminal act.
I hope that eBay takes action.

Here's the relevant part of the message I received from the eBay Customer Support:

"Hello,

Thank you for sending us the email you received. We can confirm that it
did NOT originate from eBay or PayPal. The email you received was a
"spoof" email.

Please ignore the email and delete it from your email account
immediately. Do not reply to it, and do not click on any links or
buttons in the email
."

The rest of the message explains what is "Spoof", what to do (and what NOT to do), etc.

Here's the main part:

"What is spoof?

Spoof emails are made to appear as though they have originated from a
trustworthy source such as eBay, PayPal, banks or other companies. They aim to obtain sensitive data such as passwords or financial information for fraudulent use. Spoofing is also known as "phishing", and it is an attempt to steal your identity.

A spoof email usually asks you to click on a link in the email, which
then directs you to a spoof website. The website is also designed to
impersonate the company in question and collect personal information
such as User IDs, passwords or credit card information. Sometime spoof
emails request that you enter your personal information directly into
the email.

I also got one... It said my account with ebay is -10500 EUR and that they will take the respective amount from my bank account within the next days. In order to check the ballance details, I was adviced to open the attached 'pdf', which was actually a .pdf.exe attachment.

Funny about it, my antivirus said the attachment was safe, needless to say, I didn't.

So, be careful, don't trust these MFs :snakeman:

PS: report any such phishing mails with ebay or the party they're impersonating

I've been getting those since I signed up for paypal. Never even used it. I find it funny there must be a good number of people falling for this phishing shit or they wouldn't do it.

I get those on e-mail accounts that don't exist at any of those places. I think it is safe to say that they use the shot gun approach.

That's exactly what happens to me.
I don't get those mails on my main e-mail account, that I also use on ebay and Paypal.

It's SPAM.

This isn't exactly about SPAM, but only to keep ebay buyers in Portugal informed...

Carlos, Paulo Simões, JoyDivision, and other portuguese guys (maybe this apply to Worldwide)...

Recently, I've placed a bid on ebay for a used and non-functioning Sun Cobalt Raq3 server... The seller just sent me a stupid email end change the shipping costs from $24,99 to $999...

If the guy doesn't want to sell the server outside Uncle Sam's territory, why didn't he put "Ship to: USA"? He has "Worldwide" on the page...

Is this a "honest" seller? I've inserted a "Maximum Bid" for this item, and if nobody goes up of the value I said... Something like $5 for the broken server and $999 for Shipping... I must pay $1.004 only because a stupid guy!...

Fortunally, I'm out of that sell... All my data is cleared from that item.

But beware of guys like this, who don't want to sell anything outside USA and make these kind of things...

That's one of the countless reasons I don't like McDonald's... and Chevy's...
But I love Jack Daniel's!...

Always inquire about shipping and handling costs BEFORE placing any bid!
Costs too high? I pass.

But if you read $24,99... and the guy sais "worldwide"... it's normal on make a bid... even if the shipping is more than those $24,99... Last buy I made at ebay (with other username) was also a dead server, and I paid $42 for shipping...
But this guy pushing shipping to $999....
:-$ . . . . . . . . :gun2:

And next time, I'll ask for it first

It's just a way to make more money especially if the highest bid is disappointing low for the seller.
$999 is a strange way of saying : "no I am not willing to ship outside USA"
Actually it's more like pissing off, hahaha
