From discussion on another thread, I think we need a section for people to discuss products sold by posters.
Since so much interesting gear is made that is not really a commercial product this would be a great place to bring them to peoples attention.
The short list shown in another post; Greg's SKA, Elso's Clock, Jocko's clock, Pedja's dac, FredD's input reciever/transmitter all could be discussed ad nauseum. Rest assured all would be back engineered to "improve" upon the design and execution. This has to be the most fun part for designers of working circuitry.
This post is not intended to upset anyone. I just know there are many more products out there that are of interest. I personally am only faintly aware of Jocko and Fred's designs. The being able to find the details in one thread would be great.. :cool2:

George

You started this post as I was making a suggestion for it elsewhere. So......this is now the right palce to hash this stuff out.

Comments on my clock are in the wrong thread. Deal with it.

George, that part on Jocko and Phred's designs was a joke of mine.

Anyway, a commercial forum would be the right place to discuss some circuits, if they are commercially available.
I have nothing against that, as long as the seller him/herself doesn't spread to the other areas, with something of this kind:

"Have you seen my TPA6120 circuit?" <link>
:clown:

Contribution is welcome, but not of this kind.
IMO.

Well,

I'm happy with a commercial section.

I don't want to feel like a whore.

Make it reasonable - a trial. Hasn't my thread been just that. and quite active. A showcase for DIY builds and dealing with issues and tweaks..

Cheers,
Greg

This is either wit on the level of Oscar Wilde or one the most naive statements made of this forum in quite some time. I think " back engineering" would most likely be someone sitting on their backside while I (or some other canidate) did the engineering. If I want to improve a design I know the people to ask and would probably take it offline via Email or a phone call. Even more likely I would peruse data sheets of new devices, ap notes, and text books. This what is known as designing the old fashion way or put more directly " DOING THE ACTUAL WORK".

Subjecting the the details of years of work to a chorus of "why did you"s and "why didn't you"s has been best described by Bob Pease as "being nibbled to death by ducks". Why I even personally know of one duck who's friends call him .... When one provides pictures and enough information to begin dialog without provoking much interest, why post a schematic for someone to get information from without even the effort of asking for it in a manner that demonstrates a rudimentary knowledge of the subject at hand. I am not just attempting to be nasty but honestly pointing out why good designs are not generally willingly given away on audio forums.

I await the cries for moderation, outrage, and personal attacks that this post will probably inspire. :snakeman:

Fred,
Even MY base level work gets comments from the peanut gallery. Someone wants to know why a 25 watt amp is wired inside with 18 ga wire in the three inch run to the 5 ways.

Not Oscar!

Oh come on Jocko. What is it with this double standard? Greg is blantantly marketing. No two ways about it. Why should he have his own thread for this?

I don't blame Greg. He is in business for profit. If I were selling a kit I'd want to obtain as much free publicity as possible and have a public place to talk up my product. I'd hide my schematics too.

But is THIS forum about sharing engineering ideas or is it about promoting products and kits? Is it about facts and measurements or is it about platitudes and promotions?

Why not do as has been suggested and make a "commercial products" thread for this stuff? A place where Greg and others can declare their products to be "modern classics" and provide price justifications and customer reviews with impunity.

Moderator edit: Moved to "commercial section" thread.

heh. I wish I got e-mail about wire AWG; that'd be something to laugh at.

Almost a full year after finishing my headphone amp+DAC box, I still get dumb e-mail and criticisms about the design. Usually it's people who have no technical understanding about ASRCs or things and cling to terms like 'bit perfect'. I think someone referred to it on audioasylum or something - one e-mail referred to "The Man" and how "He" was pushing "Digitization" down people's throats - I responded 'thanks for the laugh' only to find out that the person was actually being serious.

I haven't started work on an audio project in a while; lately it's been things like vacuum tube clocks and a high power switchmode battery charger for a friend's boat. I guess I follow the path of least dumb criticism :)

Traderbam:

I have read your replies......all of them. Please read mine again, carefully. (I don't want to have to move posts.....I have more pressing matters to attend to......)

A commercial section was planned for, from Day 1. Most of the details worked out in advance.

All we need is commercial interests. Which, in case no one has noticed, we do not have.

BTW........you probably do not want to hear why we don't have a lot of commercial interests. But one reason is "Why do I want to be on yet one more waste-of-time hobbyist forum? I am on too many as it is now, and I don't want the hassle of dealing with yet one more." Yep......I heard that one a lot. The truth hurts, eh?

Again, what part of "we really arean't happy with this arrangement, but we are trying it as an experiment" did you not seem to understand?

Jocko

i could be wrong, but from what i can tell there is still some dissention in the ranks as to whether this is ultimately a good idea or not. i'm a bit on the fence, though i do agree that greg's anomalous thread has been allowed to linger for a rather long time...

Jocko,
Rather than a thread called "commercial" have you considered a new section. This way each thread therin can be about a different vendors product?

Hint: this whole thread and not just this post should be moved to the commerical section. :devil2:
